5G City of Dresden

In cooperation with Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, the Saxon capital is to be expanded to become a 5G model region.

The connect-ec 2019 has shown that intra-industry and cross-industry cooperation will facilitate a success- ful start into the 5G era. The high-tech city of Dresden and the Deutsche Funkturm, which operates around 30,000 antenna sites in Germany, also have common plans: They want to quickly push forward the new mobile standard. At the opening of connect-ec on 2 May, Dresden's mayor Dirk Hilbert and Bruno Jacob- feuerborn, CEO of Deutsche Funkturm (DFMG), agreed to cooperate in the expansion of the Saxon capital into a 5G model region.

The letter of intent provides for the city to provide suitable municipal sites for capacity expansion in mobile communications with smaller 5G base stations, called small cells.

As an infrastructure service provider, with full responsibility for acquisition, planning, development, opera- tion and marketing of the radio sites, the DFMG will support the 5G expansion on site.

Although Deutsche Funkturm is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, it offers its services to all interested network operators, emphasized Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, who is also responsible for setting up a network of charging stations for electric vehicles.
