'With the first release of 5G New Radio Non-Stand-Alone in December 2017 the first importantbasis has been laid for our road to 5G. Cayetano Carbajo Martin has been appointed as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to theManagement Board with effect from 1 August 2017. In this role he is responsible for the mobileand fixed-line networks of Telefónica Deutschland. His duties also include the expansion of theLTE network as well as the consolidation of the mobile networks of Telefónica Deutschland andthe E-Plus Group. The telecommunications engineer joined the company in 2014 as ManagingDirector Networks. Prior to this, Cayetano Carbajo Martin had been working for the TelefónicaGroup in management positions for several years, most recently as Director of Technology andPlanning for the parent company Telefónica S.A.. In this position he temporarily led the overalltechnical development of all Telefónica mobile and fixed-line networks. Before that, he was CTOof Telefónica Móviles in Mexico from 2003 to 2006. In the year 2000 Cayetano Carbajo Martínwas responsible for the Network Deployment at Medi Telecom (Maroc). He started his career inthe Radio Department of Telefónica Móviles España in 1995. Cayetano Carbajo Martín studied atE.T.S.I. de Telecomunicación in Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSIT UPM), specializing inantennas as well as radio communications and radio transmission. He was born in Cáceres(Spain) in 1970, is married and the father of two children.
How Smartphones catalyze 5G evolution

Walter Goldenits, born in 1970, was appointed to Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at TelekomDeutschland GmbH in January 2017. Walter, a graduate mathematician, began his career in 1998at Mobilkom Austria, where he ultimately held the position of Head of IT. Between 2009 and joining Vodafone he was General Manager Network Services attelecommunications service provider KPN, with responsibility for mobile and fixed line operationsand development.
Dutch-born Kuisch held various management positions at KPN from 1991 onwards, includingDirector IT Operations, Director Business Process Management and Senior Vice PresidentCustomer Service & Operations. In the latter function he drove the development of integratedproducts and services and ICT solutions for enterprise customers. The broadly experiencedmanagement executive started out his career in KPN’s Dutch R&D division.

As part of the traffic swarm intelligence it will contribute a lot for a better traffic.This is nothing new: Continental has successfully introduced communication technologies,telematics and connectivity solutions with over 20 years of history and has connected more than30 million vehicles. There we are working on advanced technologies such as V2X or 5G. Thisoffers future alternatives especially for Intelligent Transport Systems (“ITS”) services and thepossibility for additional connected car applications. 5G is the next level of the mobile networkbut not an automotive specific standard yet even the .... group is heavily working on that It is ofhigh interest for the connected vehicle because it promises very high bandwidth and low latency(almost real-time) combined network capacity. As well it has the potential for lower powerconsumption and aims to be an always up-to-date in-vehicle system. Ralf Lenninger was born in Trier in 1959. He completed a degree in electricalengineering/telecommunication engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Trier, andthen studied to become an industrial engineer.
After leaving university, he started his professional career as a development and applicationengineer in the Siemens Infineon division in Munich in 1984. Here he focused on designingmicrocontrollers. In 1986, he switched to Microcontroller Product Marketing for the automotiveindustry, and here formed part of the team which developed the Microcontroller 80166 worldstandard. In January 1988, he joined Siemens automotive technology, the then automotivedivision of Siemens in Regensburg.
In August 1996, he moved to Portugal where he took on the role of CEO of the Siemenssubsidiary, Indelma/Lisbon, with the production and delivery of complete cabling systems for theautomotive industry. In September 2000, he was appointed CEO of the Mexican Siemenssubsidiary AMESA/Puebla in Mexico. In February 2002, he took on the role of manager of theelectric motors activities branch of Siemens VDO in Würzburg.
In April 2006, he was appointed Sales Director for the VW Group, headquartered in Wolfsburg.Following the takeover of Siemens VDO by Continental in 2007, he took on responsibility forsystem development, innovation and strategy in the Interior division.
In October 2017 Ralf Lenninger took over the responsibility as CEO of Continental IntelligentTransportation Systems (ITS), LLC and Executive Vice President of the ITS Business Unit. How close are we really to 5G?
'Every decade comes up with a new standard and new capabilities for mobilecommunication: GSM, UMTS, LTE and from 2020 on it will be 5G. There are not a fewindustry experts who believe, that 5G will be so revolutionary, that with its introduction thisrecurring tradition will come to an end. At least from a technical perspective there might notbe another generation of mobile technology after 5G. Should this be the case, it would beeven more important to get 5G right. But how far are we today?
Did we already witness the start of 5G at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang? Or will wesee its launch by the end of this year in the US market as announced by its operators? Asboundaries are fluent in some aspects such as LTE evolution, it is worth to take a closer lookat the current status of 5G deployment in terms of broadband, latency, reliability and IoTcapability.'

'If we remember the time when launching 3G and 4G, today there is a different kind of hyperegarding 5G. The reasons for this are most advanced smartphones, all kind of Internet ofThings (IoT) services and the digital transformation overall! All of these require connectivity,much faster, much more secure and reliable and much cheaper than 3G or 4G.
Nevertheless, today we have a similar discussion about 5G as we had with 4G 10 years ago:The analysts and shareholders warn us about the financial risks when introducing newtechnologies. Their key statement and question about LTE rollout in Germany 2010 was: “Allwhat a customer needs to do with his smartphone or laptop he can do with HSDPA. Why thehell do we need 4G?"
Fortunately we pushed LTE because we deeply believed in this technology and its future.Please let us push 5G today as well!'
Mr. Kremling is a real veteran of mobile networks: from the early 90s where he establishedthe first GSM network as a regional director in Dresden for eastern Germany from scratch todeploying 3G and 4G networks as a CTO across Germany. He has held multiple leadershippositions at operators, such as Head of Customer Service at Mannesmann Mobilfunk, CEO oftele.ring Austria and CTO of Arcor in Germany. He was a member of the board for VodafoneGermany from 2004 to 2013, where he was responsible as CTO for Network and IT inGermany and later also for Central Europe. He facilitates strong collaboration betweenoperators, universities, network equipment providers, the government and industry fordefining new mobile applications and driving standardization. 5G today – challenges for Germany – and what about 6G?
'Prof. Gerhard Fettweis is holder of the Vodafone Chair Mobile Communications Systems atthe TU Dresden and one of the most knowledgable experts on 5G. He will also address the plans of the German FederalGovernment concerning the frequency auction for 5G and explain why he thinks that theseplans are actually the best way to obstruct a fast 5G. Hecoordinates the 5G Lab Germany, and 2 German Science Foundation (DFG) centers at TUDresden, namely cfaed and HAEC. Gerhard is IEEE Fellow, member of the German Academy ofSciences (Leopoldina), the German Academy of Engineering (acatech), and received multipleIEEE recognitions as well has the VDE ring of honor. In Dresden his team has spun-out sixteenstart-ups, and setup funded projects in volume of close to EUR 1/2 billion. He co-chairs the IEEE5G Initiative, and has helped organizing IEEE conferences, most notably as TPC Chair of ICC2009 and of TTM 2012, and as General Chair of VTC Spring 2013 and DATE 2014.

Arndt Polifke, is responsible for GfK´s PoS tracking activities of the digital sectors IT, office,consumer electronics, telecom and photo devices in the region of Central Europe. From 2011until March 2018, he was Global Director for the telecom market, and in this role in charge ofthe tracking of smartphones, wearables, VR devices and smart home products in more than70 countries. As a Global account manager he was in charge of various importantmanufacturers of the smartphones industry. From joining GfK in 1992 until 2011, Arndt was invarious roles related to the consumer electronics market, including building up GfK´s PoSbusiness in Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, unfolding activities related to the market forsmart home products already in 2002 and as a Global market expert for the navigationmarket after those devices became popular after 2004. He developed various new servicesfor GfK and published many papers and press releases. He studied statistics and marketingand received his diploma as “Dipl. Kaufmann” from Augsburg university. Media via 5G – the heavy-duty job
'Broadcasters have a longstanding experience in transmitting media content to its customers.In the past this was mainly linear TV and radio. Nowadays, this is significantly complementedby non-linear media reception, be it stationary at home or on the move on smartphones,tablets or in connected cars. Current developments for new verticals in 5G are, amongothers, circling around IoT, Automotive or Smart Factories. But from a data volume point ofview nothing compares to video, its new usage formats like UHD and the extent of mediaconsumption per capita – a heavy-duty job. A very relevant share of the attractive mediacontent is produced by broadcast content providers. Therefore, the question of how to copewith the transmission of broadcast media content to the customer in a 5G world is of utmostimportance for broadcasters. Apart from the technical side aspects like economics, signalintegrity and control are indispensable.'
Jochen Mezger was born in 1969. After studying Electrical Engineering at the University ofStuttgart he received his diploma in 1995. Then he joined Mannesmann Mobilfunk as radionetwork engineer. Since 2001 he led a Vodafone team responsible for capacity andfrequency planning. In 2004 he managed the planning of a UMTS event network inValencia/Spain and became in 2006 head of department of regional network planning anddeployment in Munich. In 2007 he joined IRT GmbH as a General Manager for broadcastprogramme distribution. Today, he is member of the IRT management board and head of thebusiness area network technologies.

5Games – on implementing the games of the future through afaster mobile network
'Games have always driven technology, pushing along important innovations decisively. But atthe same time, it is also the gaming industry that has always been good at adapting newtechnologies and finding fascinating applications. Today, the technology bundled in smartphoneshas already enabled completely new gaming systems played by millions of people on a dailybasis. Pokemon Go and Ingress were two prominent innovations here. Gaming studios andcreative individuals all over the world are already in the progress of thinking about thetechnological future of gaming. 5G provides possibilities of data processing that makescompletely new games possible. Augmented reality-oriented applications and games can onlybecome truly mobile when they are able to align data from the environment and the server. Amobile 360 degree video livestream is especially useful for new ways of playing. And elaboratedlive renderings are calculated and streamed by the server. These and further trends alreadyforeseeable today will be reliant on 5G, bringing the technology to the masses – thus creatingnew rooms in which to play.'
Dr. Christian Stein is a computer scientist and German philologist working at the ImageKnowledge Gestaltung cluster of excellence at Humboldt University Berlin. There he heads thepriority area “Architecture of Knowledge”, which comprises six interdisciplinary scientific projectson structures of knowledge of the future. As one of these projects he has co-foundedgamelab.berlin, which deals with the societal effect of games of all kinds, reflects the game as acategory of thinking, develops innovative gaming prototypes and brings together theorists andpractitioners in the field. His focus in this area lies on experimental and conceptual research ofvirtual reality for the mediation of knowledge. Amongst other activities, he advises the HumboldtForum on the employment of VR in the museum area and has founded several companies.

The brothers Giorgio and Martin Koppehele form, together with their wives Suna and Gabi, theproducer and songwriter team AVENUE MUSIC. All created copyrights are bundled in their ownmusic publishing company CLASSIC ARTS GMBH. Classic Arts is the economic producer of theirproductions.
